Weddington High School sophomore track athlete Erika Newman has been named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week. Erika is hard at work to improve upon her personal best times on the track. The daughter of Perry and Torrie Newman was inspired to become a track athlete by her brother Lukas.
Since the start of her running, Erika has found a great amount of success in the shorter distance runs with top times of 27.92 in the 200M outdoors race and a 43.61 for the indoors 300M, ranking her among the best in the state for that event.
As a freshman Erika competed in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays at the NCHSAA 3A Indoor State Championship. She also qualified for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the 800m Medley Relay Emerging Elite. This Indoor season Erika has qualified for the 300M and the 4x200m and 4x400m relays at the Indoor State Championship.

Inside the classroom Erika carries a 4.25 grade point average and has maintained a straight A average for her entire school career. She is a member of the German Club, Food for Thought Club, and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). Congratulations to Erika Newman, the Carefree Boats Rising Star of the Week Award Winner.
