Weddington High School senior football player Zach Goins believes in giving his all to everything he does. Whether he is on the football field or in the classroom, coaches and teachers know they are going to get the best effort possible from Zach. The son of Andy and Patti Goins is a three time All-conference Football player, a two time All-County performer and a four year starter for the Warriors Football Team. Inside the classroom, Zach is just as accomplished, holding a grade point average of 4.86.

In a football season that saw Weddington advance all the way to the 3AA State Championship Game, Zach came through for his team week after week. In the state semifinal win over rival Cuthbertson, Zach scored two touchdowns to help the Warriors to a 24-21 win. Zach served as a team captain this season and started on offense at wide receiver, defense at cornerback and was also the special teams kick holder and punt returner. Zach truly did all that was asked by Coach Tim Carson.

In spite of the key role played by Zach, he is quick to point directly to his team versus taking the spotlight for himself.

“Our team this past year was extremely balanced. We didn’t have a single stand out star player that opposing teams could focus on and shut down. We had two capable quarterbacks in David Bayha and Grayson Willingham, along with four to five receivers contributing each game. If teams tried to shut down our passing offense, we had a combination of proven running backs led by 1,000 yard rusher Mitchel Carson.”

The Warriors capped off their best season in history thanks to a lot of kids that would do whatever it took to better the team. Zach was very happy to play a part in the team’s success and will remember the season and the last four years forever. With football now over, the time has come for Zach to look forward into the future and make a few key decisions about college.

With his outstanding grade point average and time spent in all Honors and AP classes, Zach certainly brings a lot to the table for the right college. He has also served as a Junior Marshall at Weddington, representative of his top 7.5% class ranking. Zach is a member of the Science National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Beta Club. He also serves as President of the Spanish Club.

So where will all of this and his football talents lead him?

“I have two offers from Davidson College and Butler University. I also have a partial offer from Furman University and am receiving interest from James Madison University. As a student I’ve been accepted into the Honors Colleges at the University of South Carolina and the University of Alabama.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report sends out our congratulations to Zach Goins for a job well done at Weddington High School. This young leader and Student-Athlete will go far in life and always have a wonderful set of high school memories to reflect upon. Best of luck Zach!
