In the South Mecklenburg 8 Conference, the title picture became a little more clear last night as Charlotte Catholic scored with 8 seconds to go to take the win over Ardrey Kell. South Meck threw themselves back into the race with a win over Providence. What does that mean for the final week of football?

Ardrey Kell – they are toast from a conference championship perspective. With two losses in the conference, they cannot finish in first or second. With a loss next Friday night at home against South Meck, they are staring a first round playoff match-up with Butler, Indy or Mallard Creek right in the face. Allowing the touchdown pass with eight seconds to go has really put their season into a different situation. At one point of the season, just three weeks ago, this team looked like it could win the championship, now they are playing to stay out of fourth place and will need tiebreaker help to do that if they win Friday.

Catholic – The Cougars control their own destiny now for a conference championship. If they can beat Providence next week, they are the lone wolf on top of the conference and will have a fantastic seeding for the state playoffs.   If Providence wins and South Meck loses, they become the conference champions by virtue of a head to head tiebreaker with Catholic.   This game suddenly shares top billing with Butler-Indy next Friday night.   Hey, here is a wild idea – Put both games down at Memorial Stadium like the old days and actually create excitement for all four teams.   Could have a powerhouse night of football in Charlotte.

South Meck – They certainly helped themselves with a win over Providence.   If they can top Ardrey Kell and Providence tops Catholic, we go to a second level of tiebreaker to determine a champion. Zach Gilbert running the ball takes this team to a different level.

Providence – Must top Catholic to be part of the tiebreaker situation.   This loss to South Meck really put them in a more difficult position. They are not out of it yet though. Must regroup for next Friday night at home.
