… Baseball and Softball Skills Day with Local Pro and College Stars to be held on November 8th

The South Charlotte Sports Report is proud to announce the 1st Annual Skills Day With The Stars, a baseball and softball skills day designed to raise funds for a local baseball player fighting Cancer. This unique event is open to all baseball and softball players ages 13 and under and it will be held at the South Charlotte Recreation Association Baseball Fields at Olde Providence Elementary School on November 8th

Let’s learn a little bit about the young man that inspired us to organize this fundraising event.
Eli Shenise is a twelve year old seventh grader at Community House Middle School who was diagnosed in May with a type of cancer known as Burkitts Lymphoma. After undergoing four rounds of Chemotherapy, which required him to basically spend his entire summer break in Levine Children’s Hospital, he is well on his way to what we hope will be a successful recovery. All rounds of chemo have been completed and as of his last check-up in August, he still remains cancer free.

Eli however is not out of the woods as there is a possibility that it can return with the first six months and he is still undergoing treatment for a Blood Clot that has attached itself inside his heart. Aside from being diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma Eli is a normal boy who has a passion for sports, especially baseball. He currently plays for the Stealth Seahawks but is on the IR list due to the blood clot which is not allowing him to play for the fall season. While Eli has played some time at catcher, and outfielder, first base is his favorite position on the field but above all, the kid loves having a bat in his hand and stepping up to the plate to see what the pitcher has to serve up that day. As part of his cancer journey Eli was granted a wish by the Make a Wish Foundation where he wished to be a Charlotte Knight for the day. It was an experience he will never forget.

“I was at that Charlotte Knights game and it did my heart so good to see Eli out on that baseball field, enjoying his day with these professional baseball players,” said Tripp Roakes. “For once in the last six months, Eli was able to put this fight behind him and enjoy a fun day at the ball park. As many of you know, my mind is always racing for new ideas and seeing Eli out there working on his skills with the Knights, inspired me to organize this event. I really hope the community will support this event, send their kids out to the ball park and help us raise money not only for the Shenise Strong Fund but also for local Childhood Cancer research here in Charlotte.”

In addition to the 90 minute skill sessions, we will have local professional baseball players and coaches, along with high school and college players and coaches on hand to lead skill stations for all the campers, The professional players will sign autographs and pose for photos with the kids. We have some great players lined up that are only steps away from being on a major league roster. We will begin to announce these players over the next couple of weeks.

To enroll in the Skills Day with the Pros we are asking for a $20 donation per player. In addition to the skills sessions, a silent auction with autographed items from Major League Players and gift certificates and items from local business will be held, along with a 50-50 raffle and concessions from South Charlotte Recreation Association.

There is a limit to the number of campers that can attend and we are encouraging folks to enroll early at http://www.southcharlottesports.net/skillsDay/

“Please help me to help Eli and his family and to raise more money for Childhood Cancer research. I need your help to make this event a success.”
