KATHERINE PLEVKA SETTING HIGH MARKS IN POOL AND CLASSROOM

Sixteen year old Katherine Plevka continues to build a very impressive swimming and academic resume.  The Weddington High School junior recently completed a record breaking high school swim season.  In addition to being named Conference Swimmer of the Year, she won the North Carolina State 3A Championship and set a record in the 200 Individual Medley (IM).  Not only did she set the record, she shattered it, knocking over 2 seconds off the previous record with a time of 2:04.7. The time was an All-American Time!

The daughter of Steve and Sarah Jane Plevka has been swimming for ten years and lists the IM and Breaststroke as her favorites.

In addition to the record breaking IM event, Katherine also finished 2nd in the 100 Breaststroke at the state meet.  Her 200 IM relay team with Alexa Campbell, Chrissy Jankowski, Abbi Holly finished third and her team, with only 4 qualifying members, finished 7th.

With the high school season now complete, Katherine is working hard to obtain her long course Jr. National cut times.  Katherine trains hard throughout the week at SwimMac with her coach Jeremy Knowles.

Somehow she also finds time to work hard in the classroom at Weddington High School. We asked Kathering to tell us more about her academic success.

"I am taking a harder course load this year. I have  AP Biology, Honors US History, Peer Tutoring, and AP Calculus.  My GPA is 4.65 and I’m 10th in my class(269).  I’m also vice-president of the Junior Class, a member of National Honors Society, and Beta Club.  It’s tough juggling it with swimming, but so far I’ve been able to keep my academic standards just as high as my swimming standards."

Without a doubt, that's an All-America effort inside the classroom!

Time management becomes very key for Katherine to succeed.

"It’s a lot of give and take and prioritizing.  I get what I can done during the week, but I don’t do everything so I can get to sleep; then the weekend is for catching up on work!  I’ve been lucky though because all of my coaches have always understood that Academics comes first.  I approach school and swimming in the same way:  I put in the work, and then (most of the time) I get the results I want."

As a junior Katherine must now begin to turn her attention to college.  This summer will be very busy with college visits.  With the academic record she has gathered, college coaches are going to be very excited to add her to their program.

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Katherine Plevka for her hard work and dedication to swimming and academics.  The doors to the world are open for you to be rewarded for your hard work!
