HALIE SHIPLEY FOLLOWS A ROADMAP TO SUCCESS

With the combination of a 4.6 grade point average and soccer skills that have been recognized nationally, Marvin Ridge High School junior Halie Shipley is following a roadmap to success.  The powerful, young soccer player is in her first year at Marvin Ridge High School after transferring over from Weddington High School when Marvin Ridge opened last fall.   Halie helped Weddington High School advance to the state championship game last spring. Along with her new teammates, Halie, the daughter of Kirk and Leslie Shipley has helped to establish the Mavericks as one of the top 3-A teams in the state.  Could a return visit to the state championship game be in order this spring?  Many observers believe it could possibly happen.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Ray Fumo, the Mavericks have formed a fast bond and are playing together as a team.  Halie is quick to comment on the chemistry of the Mavericks.

“We have been working well as a team this year and the new talent that we have has provided us with great chemistry and raised our level of play.”

The Mavericks are led by Halie, Chelsea Teclaw and Christina Gilboy.  All three serve as Captains for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks stand at 7-0-1 following the first eight games of the season.  On very few occasions have the Mavericks been tested.   It’s important to remember the team is playing without a senior class; so far, the team hasn’t skipped a beat playing against teams loaded with seniors.

“The players this year are trying to set the bar high so that after we graduate the teams that follow will have to work hard to break the goals we have started,” Halie said.

A key part of the season has been the head coach. Ray Fumo, a veteran coach, came to Marvin Ridge from Weddington High School and had coached many of the new Mavericks in the past.  Coach Fumo has historically produced top college talent, so the ladies were all excited to play for a veteran coach.

Halie credits the coach with helping the team to build such a high level of chemistry.

“We know how Coach Fumo coaches and what he expects us to do on the field.”

As the season enters the final games before state playoffs, Halie and the Mavericks hope to continue to keep the loss column at zero.  Following the run through the playoffs, Halie will turn her attention to her club team, The Greensboro Twisters.  The Twisters will play in the Regionals in June and then participate in the Score at the Shore.  Halie will also serve as a Camp Coach for Creative Player at the McAlpine and Queens College Camps.

In between all the soccer, Halie is hoping to attend a National Youth Leadership for Medicine at the University of Texas at Houston in July.  Halie has a very strong interest in pursuing a career in medicine and hopes to learn more this summer.
This summer will also begin the process of heavy duty college recruiting.  Halie hopes to receive college offers from Atlantic Coast Conference and Ivy League schools.  Her play this summer will go a long way towards the enhancement of her college opportunities. With the 4.6 grade point average and her desire to succeed in the classroom, Halie should have some very unique opportunities come her way.

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Halie Shipley for her dedication to success in the classroom and on the soccer field!
