COMMITMENT TO SUCCESS PAYS OFF FOR ADAM BRAWLEY

…Ardrey Kell Senior awarded with prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship

After 12 years or hard work, 18 year old Adam Brawley has been rewarded with the announcement of this year’s list of Morehead-Cain Scholarship winners.  Adam is the son of David and Ladonna Brawley.  As a member of the first graduating class of Ardrey Kell High School, David will forever be known as the first Ardrey Kell Knight to receive the award.

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is a full four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship. It is named for its benefactors, John Motley Morehead III and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation. Morehead-Cain pays for four years of undergraduate study, including the cost of a laptop computer and four summer enrichment experiences. The scholarship is worth $80,000 for each in-state student and $140,000 for each out-of-state student.

In addition to a successful academic record, Adam is a vital part of the Ardrey Kell Golf Team.  Adam works hard on his golf game and carries a 7 handicap.  Adam plays basketball for Providence Baptist Church and also enjoys weightlifting and hiking.

At the start of his high school career, Adam set a goal of winning a Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

“I am Tarheel born and Tarheel bred, so attending UNC has is something I have always wanted to do.”

Adam first applied for the scholarship in early October.  After being selected as a semifinalist, Adam attended a regional interview here in Charlotte.  Based on the interviews, 140 finalists were selected for a final interview in Chapel Hill in early March.

On March 7th, Adam received word that he had been chosen as a 2008 Morehead-Cain Scholarship winner. Six additional scholars were chosen - three from Great Britain and three from Canada.

“It was very exciting to open the email and learn that I had been chosen.  I had some other options for college, but this is what I have always wanted.”

Adam fits all the traits needed to earn the scholarship. His academic record is impressive with a 4.8 grade point average at Ardrey Kell.  He is physically active with golf, basketball and weightlifting.  Adam has been a leader throughout high school, currently serving as Senior Class Vice President.  He also has strong character, much of it developed over many years of working towards becoming an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.  Ironically Adam’s Eagle Scout project was the flag pole monument located behind the Ardrey Kell Football Field End zone.

When asked if he is sometimes overwhelmed with the time commitment to maintain at the top of his class, Adam replied.
“At times I feel like I bite off more than I can chew, but I work through it.  I hate to do something halfway, even if I have to stay up until 2 in the morning to finish my work; I make sure that everything is completed.”

“My friends, family and faith have helped me to get this far.  I am looking forward to learning and exploring the future at UNC.”

That commitment to success has led Adam to this prestigious honor.  When the chips were all laid on the table and the best scholars in the country were judged for the scholarship, Adam came out on top.  For that, Adam, his family and Ardrey Kell High School should be very proud to have produced a Morehead-Cain Scholar.

The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates Adam Brawley on his selection as a 2008 Morehead-Cain Scholar.
