TONY HEWETT SWIMS FOR THE FUN OF IT

The South Charlotte community has been blessed with world class swimmers like Ricky Berens over the last few years.  Those types of swimmers are constantly training and working towards a goal of one day swimming in the Olympics or winning a college scholarship.  We also a blessed to have a large number of swimmers like 16 year old Tony Hewett.  The son of Carl and Caroline Hewett swims competitively for New South Swimming because he enjoys the sport and loves to spend time with his friends on the team.

Tony is a junior at Charlotte Country Day School and has been swimming since the age of 16. Like so many others it all began by joining his neighborhood swim team, competing against other teams during the summer.  Tony joined the New South Swimming Team as a freshman in high school.

“A bunch of my swimming league friends wanted to join the team, so we all went together,” Tony said. “It’s a lot of fun to be around everyone on the team.”

The coach at New South Swimming, Jamie  Thomas is very proud of Tony’s improvement in the pool.

“Tony has shown steady improvement over his years at New South and he’s going to have his best year ever.”

Tony’s favorite strokes are freestyle and butterfly.  He enjoys the shorter distance races.

Tony has also been a member of the Charlotte Country Day Swim Team since middle school.  He enjoys swimming for the school and says it’s more relaxed than the meets he enters with New South Swimming.

His New South Swimming team travels around the state and region competing against some very talented teams.  Over the last year, the team has competed in Columbia, Raleigh, Huntersville, Hillsborough and Charlotte.  He trains with the team three times a week on a year round schedule.

Tony also enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee for the Charlotte Country Day Club team.  He gets to hang out with a lot of his friends and play this fast paced sport.  Tony is also very active with his youth group at South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church.

In school, Tony is a solid student and has a very strong interest in computers.  Long range, he is looking for a career involving Math and Sciences.  Once he graduates, he would like to continue swimming as he pursues his college degree.

For now, Tony looks forward to having a good time around the pool with his friends and enjoying the sport of swimming!
