CHRISTY CORE SIGNS WITH CENTRAL FLORIDA FOR TENNIS

One of the top tennis players in the Southeast resides right here in South Charlotte.  Christy Core, a 17 year old senior at Covenant Day School has traveled across the country playing tennis against the best of the best on the court.  Christy holds national rankings in singles and doubles and this fall completed an undefeated high school tennis career.  The daughter of Hap and Paula Core recently signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to play tennis for the University of Central Florida Knights.

Christy first started playing tennis at age nine.  Her father, Hap, played collegiate tennis at Furman in Greenville, SC.  From the beginning, tennis felt natural to Christy.  By age 12, she began to focus more on tennis with additional practice and a greater commitment to success on the court. She began to win statewide tournaments in both singles and doubles.   The championships began to pile up locally, regionally and nationally.  Christy went 3-2 in singles at the USTA National Opens in February 2007 and advanced to the finals of the doubles bracket. In early April, Christy posted a 5-1 singles mark at the BullFrog USTA Southern Sectional. Competing at the 2007 National Open in Georgia, she went on to claim the doubles title with an 8-1 win over the No. 2 seed. Christy has been rated as high as No. 62 on this year's recruiting rankings by TennisRecruiting.net.

Along with her doubles partner Natalie Pluskota from Georgia, Christy won the National Open in doubles this year.  Natalie and Christy are ranked # 24 in the nation in doubles.

The college recruiters began to call during Christy’s junior season.  She chose to make visits to College of Charleston, North Carolina State, Stetson and The University of Central Florida.

“I really liked everything about Central Florida.  They have a great coach, the tennis facility is real nice and I liked the University.”

In addition to playing successful tennis for the Knights, Christy hopes to major in business.

Christy is currently taking a short break from tennis.  After so many years of practicing six times a week for three-four hours and traveling across the country, Christy decided to not play in any of the Christmas holiday tournaments.  This was her first holiday break in many years not spent traveling to tennis tournaments.

She will pick up the racket again soon enough and begin to prepare for a very busy spring and summer schedule.  Once August arrives, Christy will make her journey to Central Florida for what should be a very successful college career.

The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates Christy on a fantastic high school career at Covenant Day and we wish her the best of luck at Central Florida.
