Country Boy Stuck in the City
By Lauren Boone
For many 7th graders, their life is filled with school work,
busy social life, and demanding sport’s schedules,
but for Jacob “BUG” Satterfield, he has an extra
activity to think about. As a 7th grade student attending
Charlotte Country Day School, Jacob is one of the youngest
professional hunters in the nation.
At the age
of 5, Jacob started attending hunting trips with his father and grandfather. Then
at age 8 he started to get real serious about the sport of hunting.
With many years of practice, hard work, and strong dedication,
Jacob has achieved many amazing accomplishments for a boy
of his age or for any hunter. Two of his proudest accomplishments
have been taking a moose during a hunt in Maine and improving
his bow skills. This has enabled Jacob to give advice
and write articles for Hunt Teen Magazine and Southern
Outdoor Experience, a hunting television show where Jacob
hosts his own episodes.
“I’m
just a country boy stuck in the city.” Jacob once told his family, which
is the best explanation to Jacob’s situation.
After the interview, Jacob proved this statement to me by
taking me out for our own hunting outing. For three
straight hours, Jacob and I were patiently sitting 20 feet
in a tree waiting for a buck to appear. Within the
first few minutes, four deer showed up and for the rest of
the afternoon many deer kept coming and going to the site. Near
the end of the outing, an 8 point buck joins the deer that
were currently under us. With the buck’s appearance
as his cue, Jacob gets prepared for a shot at the buck with
his bow. Impressively, he takes aim at the buck and
shoots, an amazing shot and incredibly difficult shot!
Excited
and thrilled after his shot, Jacob and I get down from the deer stand and he
explains to me how to follow the blood spots to find the wounded deer. I
felt as if I was watching his TV show from his enthused explanation of his
steps of hunting deer. It was an incredible experience that should be
shared with many.
For his
future goals, Jacob wants to expose more kids and teens into the outdoor world
and to have his own television show dedicated to hunting. As Jacob has
proven, hunting is a great way to keep kids out of trouble. And as I
have learned, it guarantees excitement and adventure to many…even to
a girl!
