Matthews Rugby Club Opening Weekend Match Recaps:

Matthews Rugby Club opened their season for youth rugby players recently.  Thanks to the club for providing these game reports.

U-11 (Ages 6 – 10) Recap
The U-11’s took the field ready to play rugby.  It was the Gold Team that scored the first official try of the season for the U-11’s making it 5 to 0 at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter, both teams were focused and made one try each but it was Gold that made the first conversion of the season for the U-11’s as well.  In the third quarter Gold  continued to place points on the scoreboard by making one more try.  However, White was determined not to give up by making one more try and the first conversion of the season for Team White.  The final score was Gold 19 to White 17, a truly close match.  Great captaining by Michael Maughan, Luke Wilson, Taber Kocmond and others.  Again, at the U-11 level, we do not focus on the score but more on the progress our ruggers are making week to week.

U-15 (Ages 11 – 14) Recap
The U-15’s kicked-off their season next.  The action was non-stop.  Since we were short U-15 players this weekend, we decided to combine teams to make it the Gold and Red Teams vs. the Blue and White Teams (keeping with the great rugby tradition of we’re all one big team).  Since we consolidated the matches, we played 6 (10-minute) quarters so all ruggers had plenty of playing time.  The combined Teams of Gold & Red (GR) came out of the gates strong by scoring 3 tries in the first quarter and making two conversions.  But it was the combined team of Blue & White (BW) in the second quarter that came to play by scoring three tries to GR’s 1.  The third quarter was almost evenly matched with GR scoring 2 tries and BW scoring one and making their conversion.  In the fourth quarter, BW continued to turn it on by scoring three tries over GR’s 1 try.  BW continued scoring placing two tries on the board before the whistle signaling one more quarter to go.  In the sixth and final quarter, both teams had something to prove.  Both teams placed two tries and made both conversions to end the ever so close match.  Final score, BW 59 to GR 53.  Great leadership by Jimmy Congleton, Dylan Kennelly and others.  In summary, for the for the U-15 league standings after Week 1, it’s a Win for Blue and White individually and a Loss for Gold and Red individually.  Again, the match results are only for placement match-up’s for the Season Finals on August 12 since every team and ruggers will have an opportunity to play in the Finals.
