Marvin Ridge 5 North Lincoln 4 (10 innings)
In the game of the season, we were treated to 10 innings of well played baseball. North Lincoln, the 2A State Champion from last year and Marvin Ridge a 3A runner up. The Mavericks elected to toss Furman signee Kyle McKernan, one of the top pitchers in the state in this very important matchup. Landon Reeves to the ball for the Knights of North Lincoln.
The first three innings were spotless for both pitchers. In the fourth, North Lincoln jumped on the board with a Matt Heavner double and a Wyatt Manus RBI single. Kyle Brittain added a single before Daniel Carter’s two run double made the score 3-0.
Marvin Ridge responded when Jeb Despard doubled and scored on a Max Hyman single. Sean Seale and Josh Schwartz followed with hits and an error led to 3 runs. The game see sawed back and forth, eventually leading to a 4-4 score in the seventh. In the bottom of the tenth, Marvin Ridge took advantage of deteriorating conditions as rain began to pour from the sky. A walk to Max Hyman led to a stolen base and then a wild pitch. After a short disagreement at the plate about playing conditions, the umpire said the game would go on. The Mavericks executed a perfect squeeze bunt by Tyler Cherry to take the win. Controversial due to the rain, but a classis game to watch
