Weddington 3 Marvin Ridge 2

Rivalry Day for these two outstanding baseball teams. Coaches Trey Putnam and Travis Poole knew it was going to be big and agreed to move this one down to Wingate University. With Wingate’s technology capabilities, the game was broadcast on ESPN 3. All baseball eyes across the country were tuned in as pitchers (MR) Kyle McKernan and (Wedd) Trevor Kowolski locked up for battle. Both pitchers would go the distance on 102 pitches each with Kyle recording 11 K’s and Trevor 9.

The key to the game became execution. With limited hitting, moving baserunners became so important. Marvin Ridge squeezed two runs across the place in the second inning with a combination of walks, stolen bases and bunts by Sean Seale, Mickey Baia and Carson Harris. Josh Schwartz also had a key sacrifice fly to keep the inning going. Those would be the only two runs scored by Marvin Ridge.

Weddington would score their three runs in the fifth on the same combination of bunts, walks and stolen bases by Dusty Mercer, Sam Kilinski, Ethan Zuleta and Will Ledford. Sullivan Newsome provided solid defense to help the Warriors hang on for the win.

Providence 2 Charlotte Christian 1

In the first matchup in over 6 years by these two teams, Charlotte Christian and Providence locked up in a battle royal. Bringing back memories of Jack Sink Tourney matchups, a pitchers dual broke out between Brett Adams and Eli Jerzembeck. Adams had his curve ball dancing enroute to 14 K’s and Jerzembeck kept extending his fastball and working in a nasty changeup for 14 K’s as well.

JD Suarez provided the first and only run for Charlotte Christian with a leadoff triple and score on Philip Abner’s sac fly.

Providence scored two in the first inning and held the lead from start to finish. Hunter Bryson doubled, Sam Fligel singled, Tommy Yakubinis bunted in Bryson before Walker Wolff singled in pinch runner David Garfinkle.

A classic matchup by two teams that will be favored to win the Charlotte Virtual High School Championship.
