Austin Leonard

Providence High School travels to Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC this weekend to face Eastern 4A Champion Millbrook.  Let’s take a look at how Danny Hignight and his Panthers can bring home the gold.

Keys to the Best of 3 Series

If Providence wins game 1, I believe its over.  Austin Leonard will pitch game two and he is the secret weapon on this Panthers team.  Austin has been one of the best control arms I have seen this year.  He will limit the opportunities for Millbrook and let the Panther bats take over

Someone in the 7-8-9 hitting spots must become red hot and produce at the bottom of the lineup.  The more times Providence can turn the lineup over to Moritz, Holtzapple and Hiatt, the greater the chance for more runs to be produced.

Small Ball:   Coach Hignight is the best in the area at producing runs using the bunt and base running.  While we have seen a couple of mistakes in the playoffs, I expect the players to fully execute and Satchel Jerzembeck will be at the heart of the production.

Errors:  Generally the Panthers have played clean baseball, if this continues it will be a great assist for the team.  They don’s play fancy, they just do what is expected.

Millbrook has good arms and we have seen the Providence bats go cold at times.  What usually happens though is the other team makes an error or two and Providence throws up a 3 spot in an inning.

Will not be a fun bus ride home if:    Millbrook hits Hiatt and Leonard hard.  It has happened and when other teams jump out early, Providence can get down on themselves.  Player leadership must respond and keep the focus on all 21 outs.

Our Prediction:    Providence sweeps the series with a high scoring game on Friday and a low scoring effort in game 2.
