How Marvin Ridge Can Win a State Title
Marvin Ridge High School travels to the campus of NC State to play Pikeville Aycock this weekend for the NC 3A State Championship. Both teams lost only five times this season and will aim to not be the team that finishes with seven losses.
Keys to the Series
I fully expect Max Wotell to be lights out in game one and give Marvin Ridge the upper hand. The best pitcher in the state has been magnificent all season long and this will continue Friday night. Wotell will make his last prep start something special for all to enjoy.
Defense – Defense will be more important in game two as I expect over half the outs in game one to be strikeouts. If Mark Mennitt’s kids can play steady and limit opportunities, the Mavericks will prevail.
Hitting – Marvin Ridge and Aycock both have strong bats, you don’t advance this far without those. Who will step up with a multi-hit, multi-RBI game?
Secret Weapon: Jason Curtis. This dynamic Maverick makes things happen on offense and defense. People count him out because he isnt as big as other superstars. Make no mistake, he is a superstar and will show it this weekend.
Will be a long bus ride home if: The game 2 and game 3 pitching falls off from the level it has been at all year. Mavericks need good pitching across the board to win. If Pikeville somehow does pull a win in game 1, this one will be tough to win for Marvin Ridge.
Marvin Ridge wins in three games with a dramatic home run playing a role. Could be from Max Wotell or Chandler Castleberry.
