9 South Charlotte Kids in Pro Baseball
We take a look at nine of the top South Charlotte kids now playing pro baseball. All of these kids are just a few years away from spending time on area high school, middle school and rec league baseball fields. Who will join this group of nine kids from our community chasing fame and fortune in the show. (please note – there are others from the area that are playing pro ball)
1. Alex Wood, Ardrey Kell, Georgia, Atlanta Braves
Any list of pro baseball players must begin with Alex Wood. The lefthanded pitcher rose through the minor league in less than one year and now is one of the anchors of the Atlanta Braves rotation. Just 6 years ago, Alex was on the mound at Ardrey Kell High School!
2. Richie Shaffer, Providence, Clemson, Tampa Rays Organization
Richie created quite the name for himself at Providence with hit bat. Who can forget the night he blasted 3 home runs! Today, Richie is the leading HR hitter in the Southern League for the Montgomery Biscuits
3. Jack Reinheimer, Ardrey Kell, East Carolina, Seattle Mariners Organization
Jack is considered on the the top middle infielders in the entire Mariners organization. His glove was fantastic at Ardrey Kell and East Carolina and now its helping him rise to the Major Leagues.
4. Ryan Butler, Ardrey Kell, UNCC, San Diego Padres Organization
Ryan has moved his fastball up very close to triple digits and the Padres are falling in love with his arm. When Ryan was at Ardrey Kell all he did was win games, no matter when you pitched him, he seemed to always win. Could be a fast riser to the Padres.
5. Brett Austin, Providence, NC State, Chicago White Sox Organization
Top of the line catcher than can hit and field with the best of them. Playing up I-85 in Kannapolis right now, he will be in Charlotte in the next year I bet.
6. Luke Bard, Charlotte Christian, Georgia Tech, Minnesota Twins Organization
Superb pitcher at Charlotte Christian, now working things out and trying to reach the big leagues like his older brother Daniel did with the Red Sox.
7. Ty Buttrey, Providence, Boston Red Sox Organzation
One of the few local kids to go straight from high school to the pros. Was lights out at Providence for Coach Hignight.
8. Brian Holberton, Myers Park, UNC-CH, Houston Astros Organization
One of the best catchers to ever come out of Charlotte. was quite the player at UNC-CH, now working hard in the Astros organization.
9. Craig Missigman, Olympic, New York Mets Organization
Craig didnt play much at Olympic, but the Mets knew all about his golden arm. They are now training him to rise through the ranks on the mound.
Other local kids playing for money — Tyler Tewell (Butler) was release by Braves on last day of spring training, playing Indy league ball in South Dakota. KJ Woods (Fort Mill) big strong hitter, still learning the game and how to use his incredible athletic talent on the diamond for the Marlins.
